Each month the Save Our Shores (SOS) organization, located in Santa Cruz, organizes a monthly beach cleanup day for the Monterey County. The next beach cleanup day is on October 8, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Zmudowski State Beach, located near Moss Landing.
Some members living in the Santa Cruz community who banned together in order to protest offshore oilrigs, which were to be placed in the Central Coast, started the organization in the late 1970s. Ever since then Save Our Shores has contributed to various laws passing in order to protect marine life in the Monterey Bay. It is because of then-executive director of SOS, Dan Haifley, who fought hard, to have the best boundaries possible for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
The contributions made by the SOS are not targeted to the Monterey Bay alone. The SOS travelled to different cities along the coast of California in order to stop oil companies building onshore facilities and successfully getting 26 of those counties and cities passing anti-oil zoning bans. The SOS has also dedicated their time and effort to educate more people about keeping the oceans clean and encouraging them to keep the shores clean.
