All across the globe, there is a rapidly growing number of young adults, ages 16-35, primarily male, who wake up on, or stay up until, Saturday morning to watch the new episode of “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (MLP:FiM). Identifying themselves as “Bronies”, these young men and women challenge society’s definition of what is appropriate for different gender and age groups. These Brony groups have flourished all over the internet and are located all over the world, coming from different ethnic, economic, and political backgrounds, united under a banner of friendship.

A wise Greek gentleman known as Plato once made the statement, “a good decision is based on knowledge and not on numbers.”

This spring semester, the amount of business students entering the Service Learning Institute is doubling. Nearly 200 business students will be completing their upper division service learning requirement, putting a strain on some of Cal State Monterey Bay’s (CSUMB’s) community partners.

The Otter Realm is back with a brand new team of talented writers and designers. This issue, our first of the Spring semester, we report on CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed and an acknowledgement of using misleading information to determine CSU presidential salaries.

With two final projects and one final test to go I stand at the edge of what was a successful fall session.
While others are dreaming of winter break adventures, I am already planning for the spring semester. A full time student status, Editor-in-Chief role, and Resident Advisor position would seem daunting to anyone- but I’m not anyone. I will admit however, that winter break sure is looking really good.

From the first disc jokey (DJ) spinning and scratching his records, to the current pioneers of the movement, the presence of Hip-Hop has transcended beyond borders, as well as racial and socioeconomic barriers.

Who would have thought Jimi Hendrix would be lighting his guitar on fire right here in Monterey? The year was 1967, when Monterey County Fairgrounds hosted the “Monterey Pop Festival.” With nearly 50,000 attendees over the three-day festival, legendary artists, such as The Who, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, The Grateful Dead, and many others made their way to rock out a festival to remember.

Graffiti has been around since before the world had color. Signs of these irritating designs have been spotted by almost everyone. They sneak up on you at the most unexpected times and appear in the most impossible places (like seriously, how can someone tag the side of an overpass?).

Despite the high percentage of dog owners in Santa Cruz County, very few areas permit the presence of our furry friends on their premises. It has become a continuous struggle for dog owners to take their dogs with them on their daily excursions. In a town full of beaches, open range, and various outdoor adventures, there needs to be more lenient laws regarding our best companions.

Normally, our Editor-in-Chief Crystal Marie Lopez writes here, but the boss-woman wants me to fill in. Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Henry Houston, Online Editor of otterrealm.net — you know, that website that you have bookmarked next to Facebook. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, we have been increasing our online content in the infinite space of the Internet, and they needed someone to sift through it all, which puts me behind the Online Editor desk.

I was browsing Yahoo! And Google News the other day and I realized that I was witness to a phenomenon that occurs every single day. There were stories being reported of massive tragedies and life-changing events from around the world: an earthquake in Turkey, Gadhafi killed, and President Obama pulling troops out of Iraq, all events that help shape the world around us. Yet when I look to see which topics and web searches are currently trending in the search engine’s top 10 listing, I see stories about Lindsay Lohan, Lady Gaga, and the NFL.

Oh, hey what’s up guys? I just parked my Chevy truck in handicapped parking ‘cause I’m late for class. I also just smoked a bowl so I better have a stog before class to mask the smell. Haha, some little hippie chick just glared at me for throwing the butt on the ground. Whatever man, go save the planet somewhere else. What is it with all this Eco-friendly shit anyways on this campus? It’s not like their efforts are gonna be noticed by the next generation. I’d rather spend my time riding my dirt bike and hitting on chicks.

Over the past couple months, I have had several different conversations with peers about the campus police and have even overheard individuals making statements like, “I hate the police,” “Our party got busted ‘cause campus police sucks,” or even things like “Wow, why did the UPD get a Prius? We must have paid for that with the rise in tuition!”

Think back ten years: imagine you are standing in line at the store when suddenly you overhear the woman in front of you say, “he wrote on my wall” and “he keeps poking me.” Undoubtedly these phrases would have seemed a bit unusual, maybe even crude, in the past. However, since the launching of Facebook.com in 2004, such expressions quickly became a part of our everyday vocabulary.

In tow with the ever growing debate, this edition of The Otter Realm sheds light on immigration issues. In an area with rich agricultural roots, we are first hand witnesses to the immense amount of work ethic migrant workers, some undocumented, show. Waking up in the early hours of the morning, many undocumented workers will work up to three jobs. Ask any migrant worker their purpose for the long hours of back breaking work and their response will be money to support their family and dreams. Bottom line, undocumented immigrants work low paying jobs that help the wavering U.S. economy.

As a young child, I was always told that becoming a father at a young age was a hassle. It was said that young fatherhood will hold you back and place unwanted stress on you. Especially if you are a college student, fatherhood requires you to give time that you don’t have and give you unwanted experiences at the wrong time.

“They’re so excited to finally have someone to love them unconditionally.” This was how a group of teenage girls (none older than sixteen), from Gloucester High School, felt when their school nurse informed them they were pregnant. Their pregnancy pact was in full swing.

A couple of weeks ago I came across a news story that really disturbed me. It described a man in Texas that allegedly beat his wife… because she didn’t “like” his status on Facebook. My first response was “You’ve got to be kidding me,” but the story did evoke memories of acquaintances that have become heated (though not to the point of actual violence) over Facebook drama.

Scabies, bed bugs, and rats oh my! Just hearing these words makes me cringe. Our dorm rooms at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) are our homes; they are where we camp out for the school year, so I think the least we could ask for is a clean place to live. With recent cases of scabies, bed bugs, and rats infesting our dorms, I’ve become extremely grossed out.

Recently a lot of people from my hometown and surrounding cities have been asking me a common question; what is the best part of college? I did not have an exact answer for this question because there are so many different aspects to consider. So in turn, this question gave me inspiration to conduct a survey around campus, asking students what is the best part of college. 100 students were interviewed.

Living with other people can be complete torture. I’m sure if most people had the resources, they would opt to live sans roommates. But as luck would have it, living with roommates is fairly standard for the average college student. At some point, most of us will live with a roommate or two and (by choice or not) one of those roommates will be a member of the opposite sex.

Over the summer I completed my first part-time job in a career that I had been interested in for awhile. A position like the one I held would be considered an internship by many, including myself. According to the International Education site, “an internship is a work-related learning experience for individuals who wish to develop hands on work experience in a certain occupational field. Most internships are temporary assignments that last approximately three months up to a year.”

In January, President Obama presented Americans with his State of the Union address. Obama pressed the importance of sciences in higher-educational systems, but one “little” area was left in the dark yet again: ARTS. Not once did Obama mention any importance of the arts systems in America, but instead refused to address the issue entirely, placing his full attention on the S.T.E.M. subjects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The Otter Media has been streaming since 1996 on the California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) campus. Yet why is it that when brought up many people are scratching their heads clueless on the topic?
