Some of the Oxford Dictionary's newest word additions include FYI, LOL and OMG. The latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, recently updated on March 24 includes some new words that have been used primarily on the internet and for texting.
The words FYI (for your information), LOL (laughing out loud) and OMG (Oh My God) have made it into the dictionary as official words. These abbreviations have become a mainstay in social media and have now found their way into everyday speech and usage.
According to Sophia Langevin, Senior, Liberal Studies, "It's crazy. LOL is not a word; it's an abbreviation of words. It seems like the younger generation uses these words that were originally just for texting and Facebook in real life conversations. That's really annoying."
In addition to the abbreviations, the heart symbol ♥ — meaning "love" — has been added to the dictionary. The symbol is best known for its use on t-shirts saying "I Love NY". Its use has exploded from the original usage in t-shirts and bumper stickers to texting and online social media.
