Rape and Sexual Assault Resources

With the recent uproar of coverage of rapes across college campuses, rape and sexual assault on university campuses has become a prevalent topic of discussion for co-eds and parents alike. According to crisisconnectioninc.org, a rape on university campuses occurs every 21 hours and campusrape.org reports that sixty-five percent of those campus rapes will go unreported. Both female and male students are affected by this travesty and many, by proof of the statistics, are often afraid to talk about it or are unaware of where to go for help. All that you need to know is that the resources are out there. Listed here are resources anyone can look into for help with rape and sexual assault or the prevention of both.

County Resources:

Monterey County Rape Crisis Center

The Monterey County Rape Crisis Center is a non-profit agency serving North Monterey County and it’s surrounding areas. The organization is committed to advocating for victims of sexual assault, and to preventing sexual violence through public education.

Campus Resources:

KIN 134: Self-Defense for Women

The women's self-defense class, offered on campus, is a hands-on class that incorporates the four components of self-defense: awareness, avoidance, verbal, and physical techniques. Taught by Professor Christine Derr the class teaches verbal and physical self-defense skills from a standing position and from the ground. The purpose of the course as a rape-prevention course aims to reduce fear and empower students (both female and male) with skills to defend themselves against physical, verbal and sexual attacks. (source: Course Catalog)

R.A.D. Self Defense System

The Rape Aggression Defense Basic Personal Defense System (R.A.D) is a national program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques taught for women only. All courses are taught by UPD Officers and CSUMB Staff — both of which are Nationally Certified R.A.D. Instructors. The R.A.D. system provides students with the knowledge to make educated decisions about personal defense. Students will also be provided with information on physical and non-physical options, as well as insight into the attacker’s mindset. (source: http://police.csumb.edu/rad-self-defense-system)
